To cool down, head for Banje Beach, whose clear water and busy bars stand under the city walls. For a higher view and mountain breezes, take the cable car to Mount Srđ.

A short boat ride away is Lokrum Island, home to botanical gardens, strutting peacocks, and cool swimming spots. Take the ferry from just outside the city walls, find a shady spot under the pine trees, and jump straight into the cool Adriatic.

Overlooking Bryggen—once part of the Hanseatic League—is the impressive Bergenhus Fortress, dating to the early 1500s. There are more wonderful views from Mount Fløyen, reached by the Fløibanen funicular.

Find out more about the Hanseatic League in the dedicated museum, housed in one of the oldest wooden buildings in Bergen. Then visit the Fish Market, a reminder of the trade the league was founded on.

The ornate Baroque interior of St. John’s Co-Cathedral holds unique masterpieces by Caravaggio. In the Upper Barrakka Gardens, take in outstanding views of Valletta’s mighty 16th-century fortifications and the Grand Harbour they protect.
