The best time to visit Turks & Caicos is between December and April. The archipelago, which lies southeast of the Bahamas and just north of the Dominican Republic, enjoys a tropical climate, and this period usually brings calm weather, warm, low rainfall, and sunny days.
Turks & Caicos really only has two seasons: the “hot” season, from May to October, and the “cool” season from November to April. Even then, the temperature variation between the two is only around 10°F (5°C).
Grand Turk in particular is known for its world-class diving, with colorful reefs and spectacular drop-offs, and excellent visibility all year round. For the best beach weather, though, aim for the winter months, when the heat is less intense.
Visiting Turks & Caicos by Season
Summer
June, July, and August are the low, or “hot” season in Turks & Caicos. The weather is certainly hot, with average daily temperatures of around 82°F (28°C) and warm nights. The sea is blissfully warm, whether you want to dive or just swim and snorkel.
While summer is regarded as hurricane season throughout the Caribbean, Turks & Caicos is rarely affected. Statistically, August and September are the most likely months when travel here may be disrupted by a hurricane.
Fall
September, October, and November are regarded as the rainy season in Turks & Caicos, but compared to the Caribbean islands to the south, the archipelago actually receives very little rainfall. When it does rain, expect short, sharp bursts which clear the humidity. Average temperatures are around 82°F (28°C) in September and October, dropping to 79°F (26°C) in November.
Although September to November is still the official hurricane season in the Caribbean region, it’s very rare for hurricanes to affect Turks & Caicos in October and November. Although these months have relatively high rainfall, this archipelago is still one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean for travel in the shoulder season. You can expect around 3.5 inches (89mm) of rain in October and 3.4 inches (86mm) in November, with around five rainy days a month interrupting the otherwise fine days.
Winter
December to February is the peak, or “cool” season in Turks & Caicos, with low rainfall and consistently warm, sunny days. As such, this is the best time to go to Turks & Caicos for an active vacation, when the heat isn’t so draining.
Expect average temperatures of around 76°F (24°C) and highs of 82°F (28°C). This period is likely to be busier, with visitors from the cooler regions of North America and Europe heading south to escape the cold winters.
Spring
In March, April, and May, temperatures slowly increase, reaching an average of 81°F (27°C) by May. March and April is arguably the best time to visit Turks & Caicos, with low rainfall and manageable temperatures. May, however, is a wetter month, with an average of 5.8 rainy days, compared to just 1.3 in April, one of the driest months.
When Is Rainy Season?
The rainy season in Turks & Caicos is August to November, when storms may pass through. But relative to the rest of the Caribbean, rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, and long periods of gray skies are unusual.
When Is High Season?
High season in Turks & Caicos is the Christmas and New Year’s rush in December, and then the cooler months of January to April. The islands receive the most visitors during this period, attracted by the fine, stable weather conditions and the warm sea.
When Is Shoulder Season?
Shoulder season is May, when there is slightly more rainfall but the heat is less intense than from June to September, and a brief period between mid-November, when the chances of hurricanes are vastly diminished, and the Christmas peak.
When Is Low Season?
Low season in the islands is the summer months of June to September. Although Turks & Caicos receive much less rain than the more southerly islands in the region, the heat and humidity can be draining during these months. Having said that, this is still a great time for diving and snorkeling, and there will be fewer visitors around.
