During last year’s International Women’s Day, Celebrity Cruises became the first cruise ship to sail with an all-female bridge. Led by Captain Kate McCue, Celebrity Edge sailed out of Florida with a team of 26 other women from 16 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, Israel, Ukraine, Greece, and more. Now, a year later, we continue to celebrate the monumental achievement of this sailing during Women’s History Month.
Only 2% of the world’s mariners are women. A few years ago, Celebrity Cruises started a company-wide initiative to #BRIDGEthegap in an effort to help close the gender discrepancies in the maritime industry. In the past few years, our bridge teams have grown from having only 3% of women on board to 25%.
This week, in honor of this barrier-breaking sailing, we reunited some of the crew members that were on board for that historic journey, along with our trailblazing CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, the first female CEO in the cruise industry, for a special interview that looks back on their remarkable achievement.
Calling in from around the world, either from their homes or while stationed on Celebrity’s cruise ships scattered throughout the globe, these women reflect on that special journey and discuss why it was one of the biggest highlights of their careers. During this special Q&A session, they also discuss what it’s like to be a woman in the maritime industry and give us a special, behind-the-scenes look into their lives at sea.
Join us in celebrating this impressive group of women and their incredible accomplishments at sea.
